How it works

Our 4 step potty training system

Housebreaking is not a mystery. It is four steps, run consistently, until your puppy’s body clock and your routine line up. Skip the system and you get months of random accidents. Run it right and most puppies catch on fast.

Start a Potty Log

The step almost everyone skips. For a few days you log every potty event: time of day, success or accident, pee or poop, inside or outside. That log surfaces the real patterns (accidents right when the kids get home, every Sunday afternoon during the game) and those patterns become a schedule built for your puppy. No guessing, just data.

Build a schedule by age

An 8 week old puppy goes out about every 30 minutes while awake, and you add roughly 15 minutes of hold time each week as his body matures. Always go out right after waking (even a short nap), after eating or drinking, and after play. If he ate, drank, or just woke up and has not gone yet, he owes you one.

Supervise like a hawk

Most potty problems come from unseen accidents, which are not teachable moments, just quiet habit building on your rug. Keep your puppy in sight: baby gates or a leash tether to keep him near you, and the crate when you genuinely cannot watch. You will not hover forever. Every accident he does not get to have is progress.

Teach what is right

When he goes outside, mark it: calm, quiet praise while he is going (“good potty”), then “Yes! Good job!” with a pet or a treat once he finishes. If you catch him starting inside, a quick “No” (dialed to how sensitive he is) interrupts, then straight outside to finish and praise. No scolding after the fact. If it already happened he cannot connect it, and correcting late only teaches fear.

Common questions from Brevard puppy owners

How long does potty training take?+
It depends on your puppy’s age, breed, and how consistent the household is. A younger puppy has less bladder control to work with, so part of it is waiting for his body to catch up. What we can promise is a system that gets you there as fast as biology allows, with far fewer accidents along the way. The biggest lever is consistency: same routine, same supervision, same praise, every time. Text us your puppy’s age for a realistic estimate.
We are on a schedule and still having accidents. Could something be wrong?+
Sometimes, yes, so it is worth ruling out a medical cause before you assume it is training. If your puppy pees excessively or dribbles, pees while sleeping or lying down, or seems uncomfortable or strained, that can point to a UTI or another medical issue. Check in with your vet first. No amount of scheduling fixes a urinary infection. Once he is cleared, we run the system with confidence.
Should we use pee pads?+
If you can skip them, we would skip them. Pads can confuse a dog long term because they teach him that indoors is an option. Most trainers avoid them unless there is a real reason: a mobility issue, harsh weather with no safe outdoor option, or high rise living with no quick yard access. If your situation genuinely calls for pads, we build a plan that transitions off them cleanly.
How does my puppy learn to tell me he needs to go out?+
We teach a Door Habit. Use the same door every single time, paired with a consistent cue like “Let’s go outside!” Over time your puppy learns to head to that door on his own when he needs to go, and to answer when you ask “Do you need to go potty?” It is a small routine that builds real communication, and it beats guessing.
My puppy will not potty in the rain. What do I do?+
Very common here, and we plan for it directly. We set up a covered or partly covered potty spot, teach a potty cue so he goes on command instead of stalling, and build a quick between storms routine. The goal is that a Florida downpour does not blow up the day’s progress or send him back to the tile.
We have a townhome with a screened lanai and no real yard. Can you still potty train?+
Yes, that is exactly the kind of setup we plan around. We will figure out whether a designated grass spot, a pad to grass transition, or a specific potty route works best for your building and HOA rules, and build the routine so the lanai does not accidentally become the bathroom.
